Corporates thanked for their support of Demelza

Charlton Chairman Michael Slater who ran the London Marathon last year for Demelza was among the winners at the annual Demelza Business Awards on Friday (April 19th).

Singer and presenter Cheryl Baker was the host for the awards ceremony at the Marriott Tudor Park in Maidstone. The annual event is a chance for Demelza to thank its corporate supporters for their fundraising over the past 12 months.

Guests at the black tie dinner heard teenager Lucy talk about her experiences of coming to Demelza at the event which was sponsored by Lewisham-based Regular Cleaning Services.

Cheryl Baker said: “I have supported Demelza for many years now and I am more than happy to be involved in the awards ceremony.

“Demelza receives great support from businesses and individuals alike from Kent and across the South East.  None of us do it for a pat on the back -  we do it because Demelza needs and deserves this support.”

The winners were as follows:

  • Staff Fundraiser of the Year: Michael Slater – Charlton

Charlton Athletic have supported Demelza for a number of years, and Michael Slater as the club’s Chairman took it upon himself to raise over incredible £30,000 for the charity by running the London Marathon in April 2012. He contacted all the other football clubs for support as well as tirelessly fundraising to raise this amazing amount, culminating in a Demelza Go Dotty day at the Valley, where players, staff and fans all got involved in wearing dots to help add to his total.

  • Outstanding Voluntary project – William Hill

Staff from branches throughout the south east came together to plan and run the Demelza Christmas party for children and families. Staff worked tirelessly theming the party, sourcing entertainment, presents and decorations. On top of this they spent two days setting up and running the party with many of the families saying that it was one of the best parties they had been to.

William Hill staff have also fundraised, and continue to do so for Demelza.

  • Outstanding Long-term Supporter: Canary Wharf Contractors

Canary Wharf Contractors have been supporting Demelza since 2004, and have to date raised over £140,000 from fundraising activities including golf days, five a side tournaments and staff fundraising.

Canary Wharf Contractors are currently working on a new Garden of Tranquillity at Demelza’s hospice in Kent which when finished will be a wonderful haven for families at Demelza to enjoy for years to come.

  • Outstanding Fundraising team – Soccer Elite

Soccer Elite chose Demelza as their first ever charity partner with two aims, to raise over £10,000 and to help raise their profile within a broad demographic of grassroots football with Kent. Soccer Elite’s support started with the founders and owners but quickly spread through the whole organisation. Most of their coaches visited Demelza for a tour so that they could really understand the work we do and spread the word to all of the academies they run as well as inspire them to organise many events. These include two charity football games which saw ex professional footballers taking on a Soccer Elite team and a black tie dinner dance. On top of this the team have volunteered at our children’s Christmas parties and organised a 12 hour football marathon.

  • Outstanding Corporate supporter – Berkeley Group

In June 2012 Woolwich-based Berkeley met with Demelza to discuss establishing a relationship. Over the following year the relationship has developed into a very successful partnership.

Last September they organised their inaugural 5 a side football tournament with great success, 36 corporate teams took part raising an amazing £20,000. More recently Berkeley organised a unique fun run in a station box they had just build for the crossrail programme in South London, this raised £3,000 and generated a great deal of PR for Demelza.

  • Outstanding Gift in Kind – Swale Heating

This is the first year we have presented this award. We have seen a growing trend to support Demelza from companies offering their product or service as a gift in kind, saving us valuable money.

Swale Heating approached Demelza and offered to service the heating systems of both the Kent and London hospices in 2011. As well as servicing the boilers they provide labour free of charge for any repairs required. Swale Heating also display the Demelza logo on each of their 220 service vehicles and the logo is on their website with a direct link to Demelza’s site as well as on their letterheaded paper.

More recently Swale Heating added the Demelza logo onto all of their TV adverts to help raise awareness of the charity across the whole of the South East.

Matthew Edwards from Swale said: “Demelza is at the heart of everything we do and gives our staff a real sense of pride”.
