End of life care

Fortunately, child death is very rare and even at a children's hospice does not happen often.

Demelza can offer an alternative to hospital or home when end of life care is required. Demelza will liaise with all professionals involved in the child or young person's care to ensure that they are cared for in the best possible way.

Demelza can provide complex symptom control and has 24/7 specialist medical input and support available. We use a variety of pain measurement tools depending on a child or young person's age and developmental ability.

After the child or young person has died, we have a bereavement suite at Demelza Kent and Demelza South East London which includes a private lounge area where we can continue to provide support, as required, until the funeral.

The Care Teams can support the family in making the funeral arrangements that suit their specific individual, cultural, spiritual and emotional needs if required.

Demelza aims to work collaboratively with all areas of the acute services to provide a choice of setting for the child or young person who requires end of life care.

Our bereavement suites can also be made available to the wider community.
