Support groups

We have a range of support groups to meet the needs of children, young people and their families.  The main aims of all groups are to reduce isolation, and, as far as possible, promote independence.

Groups include:

Sibling Groups which are designed in the knowledge that siblings often tell us how they sometimes miss being around other children and young people who also have brothers or sisters that have life limiting or life threatening health conditions.

"I've got loads of really good friends.....but they don't really uderstand what it's like when my brother's really poorly".

Because we know that age can sometimes be a barrier for children and young people to make connections with each other, we have created two Siblings Groups.

We have approximately four regular meetings across the year.  To find out more, please contact us.

Parent Support Groups are developed according to what parents say they need.  Some are designed to meet the needs of specific groups of parents:

'Shoulder to Shoulder',
a men only group that meet for social activities where each person is free to talk about their child and gain support from other group members but not in a therapy type environment.

Other groups we have experience of delivering include:

Mum's Group,
where a space is provided with crèche facilities for mums to meet and access mutual support

Café Groups,
which are supported to meet in more remote locations away from our hospice sites, i.e. Margate, so mums and dads can meet other Demelza parents to share information.

We believe that our Parent Support services must be as flexible as possible but still remain respectful of parents and the changing demands they face.  We welcome suggestions for a range of groups and will work with parents to achieve them.  Equally, we will always be open about what we can realistically offer and things that are beyond our resources at that time.

Grandparent Groups are places where grandparents may find support from others in a similar position to themselves.  There are four scheduled meetings per year but we do encourage group members to develop their own support systems by keeping in contact with each other outside of the group.

Parent's Forum is run by parents who currently use or have previously used Demelza services.  The Parent's Forum is able to put forward ideas from a family perspective to help shape Demelza services.  This is important to all of us as this is one way of ensuring we continue to hear the 'voice' of families to positively develop our services.  Demelza is able to consult with this group on various aspects of service development.
